Please join me, Charlie Seppelt – a fifth generation Seppelt family and Senior Winemaker at the Seppeltsfield Estate, to learn about the history of the Winemakers Lawn and the buildings surrounding it.
By the time of the death of founder Joseph Seppelt (my great, great grandfather) in 1868, he had evolved Seppeltsfield into a prominent farming Estate, with grape growing and winemaking at its core.
Seppeltsfield expanded significantly through the years 1869 – 1900 as a result of the rapidly increasing demand and continued success of the wines being produced. The estate also provided food for my great grandparents Oscar Benno and Sophie Seppelt to sustain their large family and the estate workers through diverse agricultural ventures, including crops, orchards, and livestock.
The monument located on the Winemakers Lawn has plaques that commemorate both the first hundred years of Seppeltsfield in 1951, and the 150h anniversary of the Estate in 2001.
I encourage you to refer to the map on this website for the route to continue to hear the Seppeltsfield Estate history. The location of the next podcast is the historic Blending Cellar and iconic Centennial Cellar building.
